Potatoes, Mushroom, Onion Gratin pinit

The other day I was wondering what can I make that would feel like a full meal and not miss the meat. So I decided on experimenting with three ingredients which I really like and I thought would taste good. Guess what I really liked it so I decided to share it with you. Yes, the main three ingredients are in the title. Red onions, small potatoes, and mushrooms

Indulge in the savory and comforting flavors of Potato, Mushroom, and Onion Gratin, a delightful dish that will satisfy your cravings for a hearty and satisfying meal. This recipe is a result of my culinary experimentation, as I sought to create a meatless dish that would still offer a fulfilling and flavorful experience.

With just three main ingredients – red onions, small potatoes, and mushrooms – this gratin delivers a combination of flavors and textures that will leave you pleasantly surprised. Sliced white mushrooms provide a meaty and earthy taste, perfectly complemented by the sweetness and depth of red onions. Together, they create a medley of flavors that is reminiscent of traditional meat-based dishes.

The addition of potatoes adds a comforting and hearty element to the gratin. As they cook, the potatoes become tender and creamy, creating a satisfying base for the dish. The combination of these three ingredients results in a gratin that is rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying.

Not only is this recipe delicious, but it also offers versatility in its usage. Midway through the cooking process, you already have a delightful side dish that can accompany a variety of main courses. However, if you continue with the additional steps, you can transform this gratin into a standalone meal that is satisfying and robust.

While the preparation may involve a few steps and take a bit longer, the process is straightforward and the end result is well worth the effort. Furthermore, this dish can be enjoyed both freshly prepared and as leftovers, as it retains its delicious flavors even when served cold.

So, if you’re seeking a meatless meal option that doesn’t compromise on taste or satisfaction, look no further than Potato, Mushroom, and Onion Gratin. With its rich flavors, comforting textures, and versatile usage, this dish is sure to become a new favorite in your culinary repertoire.

I use sliced white mushrooms but you can try with a different variety as well. The idea was to have a mixture of flavors and textures. This combination of onions and mushrooms actually almost feels like there is meat or chicken in the dish which is a nice complement to the potatoes. If you had just the mushrooms in the oven with the potatoes you would probably not get the same result.

In fact, this recipe can be used for two different meals. Halfway through the process, you already have a wonderful side dish, but you can continue to create a meal that stands on its own. The food is easy to prepare yes it has steps and takes a bit longer but there is nothing to it. By the way, it is good the first day and you can have it as leftovers, it even tastes good cold.

  1. Slice the red onion and in a pot add a tablespoon of olive oil first on high heat then lower the heat and put the lid on and let the onion cook slowly until it is well cooked, soft, and sweet. Stir occasionally so they don't burn or stick to the pot.
  2. Slice the potatoes in 4 parts each add them to a baking sheet and add some olive oil mix and then add spices, and herbs: ground black pepper, thyme, basil, and if you like some salt.
  3. Spread some bread crumbs this makes it crunchier. Now put in a heated oven about 200°C and bake for 25 minutes. Halfway through I usually using a large spoon turn them over so they cook evenly and get crunchier.
  4. Once the onions are nice and soft, you can add the mushrooms, then add a bit of pepper and a splash of soy sauce. Put the lid on. Let the mushrooms cook slowly. Mushrooms usually release some liquid. Once the mushrooms are almost cooked, remove the lid and reduce the liquid.
  5. Add the mushrooms and onions on top of the potatoes and put it back in the oven for another 10 minutes.
  6. In ten minutes, you have a delicious side dish...!

  2. Sprinkle more breadcrumbs and top with shredded cheese and return to the oven for 20 minutes.
  3. After 20 minutes you have a flavorful dish!
